The Department was established in 1961. It has since grown and matured to a well staffed and equipped organization with a world wide reputation in clinical service and research. As a part of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Hong Kong, it provides undergraduate teaching for medical students, post-graduate courses in medical sciences and carry out researches in clinical and basic science related to orthopaedics. As a part of the Hospital Authority it serves a major portion of the population of Hong Kong and provides post-graduate specialty training for surgeons. The department would celebrate its 50th Anniversary in 2011 in conjunction with the 100th Anniversary of the University of Hong Kong.
